What Should You Be Studying? Industries that are Hiring During COVID-19

Monday, May 25, 2020

As of now, many industries are facing reduced hours and employee layoffs, with our current economic climate. However, according to BC Jobs and other industry resources, there are many sectors that are still growing and currently seeking applications for new workers.

We’ve provided an in-depth summary of where you should focus your skills, if you’re planning to head back to school in the near future.

Healthcare Providers

In addition to doctors and registered nurses, our communities are in dire need of more healthcare professionals to work on the frontline. Vancouver Career College offers a 75-week Practical Nursing diploma programthat will prepare you to work as a licensed practical nurse.

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are primarily responsible for the frontline delivery of healthcare in hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes. Under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses, LPNs are able to provide patient assessment and care to clients in residential care facilities, palliative and long-term care, and assisted-living facilities. Establish a career in helping our most vulnerable population, during this challenging and unprecedented time, and graduate with a number of hands-on, clinical placements before you begin work.

Pharmacy

While community and hospital pharmacies remain open, as an essential service, there is an abundance of jobs available as pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy assistants. Shopper’s Drug Mart and Loblaws, among many others, are currently looking to fill many positions.

Vancouver Career College’s Pharmacy Assistant program will prepare you to work alongside pharmacists and process patient information, discover compounding techniques, and run day-to-day operations in the pharmacy. In just 36 weeks, you’ll graduate with hands-on knowledge in community pharmacy, pharmacy software systems, sterile products and aseptic techniques, and much more.

Supply Chain Management

In addition to medical and essential workers, there is a need for non-clinical workers. According to BC Jobs, supply warehouses require supervisors, distributors, inventory and merchandising (2020).

As the manufacturing and distribution of essential products such as sanitizers, masks, and gloves are at an all-time high, Vancouver Career College’s Supply Chain Management program will prepare you for a career in inventory management and control, demand planning, warehouse operations, and more. Graduate with hands-on experience in packaging and materials handling, freight forwarding and logistics management and prepare for a career as a sourcing and procurement specialist, purchasing manager, supply and demand analyst, and more.

Web & Software Development

As more provinces are practicing safe distancing and working remotely, there is a steady incline in the use of video conferencing software, online meetings, and mobile collaboration services. According to Forbes, Zoom and Slack have hundreds of positions available in software development and engineering, technical support, accounting, customer service, and sales (2020).

Vancouver Career College’s Web and Mobile Application Development program will be vital in developing skills to create software and build websites and mobile applications. Learn the fundamentals of iOS development with Swift, Android app development, and create fully-functional webpages with hands-on training in programming logic and design.

The tech sector is constantly growing, and now is a better time than ever to start a new, indispensable career path. Fill in the REQUEST INFO form to learn more.
