BC Paralegals to May Take on More Responsibilities

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

New developments in BC could mean changes for paralegals, according to a recent report from News 1130. If you're considering going back to school to start a career in law, then you may have even greater responsibilities as a paralegal than in years past.

The new pilot project could allow for paralegals to make appearances in court, fully representing their clients and dealing with procedural issues, the news source states.

"It can be things like changing the venue, getting disclosure of financial documents, and so on," Doug Munro, a representative from the Law Society, told the news outlet. "The theory...is that the designated paralegal can be charged at a lower rate than a lawyer [and there] can be some costs savings realized."

The proposal will take on a two-year trial period to determine whether or not paralegals are fit for the job and can provide these services in an efficient manner.

Some officials think that it won't necessarily save costs, because a lawyer will still be required to review the material before the court of law.

Each province has different obligations and duties for paralegals, and in Vancouver, they could be expanding. To see for yourself, you can start by enrolling in the Paralegal program at Vancouver Career College. Fill out the form on the right for more information.
