Program prepares graduates for work in a range of medical lab settings in 37 weeks
Abbotsford, BC – October 16, 2012 – Vancouver Career College has introduced a new
Medical Laboratory Assistant program in
Abbotsford. The 37-week program is designed to prepare students for a career in a range of medical lab environments from hospitals and clinics to quality assurance and private testing labs.
“Medical laboratory assistants play an essential role in our healthcare system, collecting blood samples, processing specimens and, in some cases, performing electrocardiograms (ECGs),” says Larry Heinzlmeir, VP of Marketing for Vancouver Career College. “The Medical Laboratory Assistant program will help students gain the fundamental skills and knowledge to enter this career field.”
The Medical Laboratory Assistant program combines lectures, demonstrations and hands-on exercises to give students a solid foundation in the techniques and practices used in various medical labs. They study medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and clinical chemistry. They also learn about quality assurance, laboratory math, safety and aseptic techniques. Other topics covered include hematology, cytology, histology, standards of practices, ethics and legislation.
Prior to graduation, students will participate in a mandatory clinical placement that will give them the opportunity to apply their training and gain practical experience in a medical lab environment.
Along with their diploma, graduates will also be eligible to obtain a Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate through the British Columbia Society of Laboratory Science (BCSLS).
